Why Homeschooling Can Be the Best Academic Choice for Your Kids
I totally get it. The idea of homeschooling can feel like a huge leap, and you might be wondering if it can really provide the kind of academic success your kids need. It’s tough to imagine how you’ll make it work—especially if you’re hearing so many doubts from others who are convinced that homeschooling is inferior to traditional school.
Here’s the thing: The rumors aren’t true. Homeschooling can actually give your child a better academic experience than traditional schooling ever could, especially when you’re intentional about it.
Here’s why I’m so confident homeschooling can be academically superior:
Pacing Your Child’s Learning – When you homeschool, your child gets to learn at his or her own pace. For my kids, that meant being able to skip ahead in certain subjects when they’re ready or to slow down when they need extra help. With a smaller class size (like one-on-one!), they aren’t just waiting for the next lesson like they might in a crowded classroom.
I’d love to know how much of my childhood was wasted waiting for other kids to finish things I had already completed. And yes, I’m sure others felt the same way while I took longer on assignments than they did! It’s just the nature of mass education: Everyone is tethered together, and each one is limited one way or the other by the pace of everyone else.
When my children struggle with a concept, we can slow down and break it down together. For example, with one of my kids, we spent a lot more time on long division, until it clicked for him—something that wouldn’t have been possible with a room full of students who already understood the process and were ready to move on. Despite a teacher’s best intentions, she has to care for the entirety of the class, which limits the attention she can give to each individual.Tailored to Their Strengths – Homeschooling is a completely personalized, tailored approach to learning, keeping the needs of your specific child at the forefront. If your child is gifted in a particular subject or interest, you have the freedom to focus on that area and allow more room for him or her to grow.
You can look to the likes of Simone Biles and Venus and Serena Williams, among others, whose homeschooling allowed them more time to devote to developing their extraordinary abilities, but you don’t even have to go that far.
Homeschooling can allow an art-inclined child (like my oldest son) to spend more time learning and developing his artistic abilities, while it can provide a kid like my daughter, who loves creating through baking, the opportunity to launch and run her own business selling sweets out of our home (and to learn about the corresponding requirements to run a business like that in the process—This experience has actually been a huge factor in her decision to pursue a Business degree). It can allow a musically-inclined child to excel in an instrument while an athletic child excels in sports. It takes hands-on learning to a whole new level, as there is less time spent in the “classroom” and more time devoted to each child’s strengths.Customized Curriculum for Your Child – Whether your child loves history or excels in math, homeschooling allows you to customize his education to fit his needs. We as parents get to decide the emphasis we place on different subjects, making sure our kids are excited and challenged in the right ways.
If your child is taking off in one subject, you have the freedom and prerogative to advance her to a higher grade level in that subject, while keeping her in a lower grade level for subjects she needs more time with. (I currently have two of my kids working ahead in math but not in everything else.)
Conversely, if your child does well in everything except one subject, you have the ability to advance him in everything except that subject, then decide how you feel you can best handle reinforcing the subject he struggles with.
Traditional schooling simply doesn’t allow for that degree of flexibility and movement between grade levels and subjects.
Because of the tremendous amount of one-on-one attention and overall customization that we homeschooling parents can provide, homeschooling truly can be an academically superior experience for our children!
