The Pressure of Perfection

September 17, 20243 min read

You aren't perfect.
Your kids aren't perfect.

So why do you keep expecting your homeschool to be?

"Perfect" is a TON of pressure to live under. Yet we all get pulled into the trap of perfection, oftentimes without even realizing it!

Just think about it...

You see that perfectly curated reel by your favorite mom-blogger... You know the one with the precious, perfectlybehaved little kids bounding through the perfectly lit meadow with the perfect breeze blowing through their perfecthair...

You scroll down to see some Pinterest-worthy pics of the perfect homeschool space, all neatly organized...

You scroll again to see a perfectly arranged bookshelf with homeschooling materials stacked neatly in alphabetical order...

Everything. Is. So. Perfect.

But guess what? That's not real life.

In real life, my kid's hair is not perfectly done, the meadow is muddy, the wind is too windy, we're all getting sunburns, and my son couldn't find matching socks or one of his shoes on the way out the door. In real life, my bookshelf is loaded down with too many books per shelf (stacked sideways on top of each other). In real life, my homeschool space is barely existent, much less perfect or Pinterest worthy.

But we continue to put so much pressure on ourselves by trying to measure up to unrealistic, curated-for-the-Internet, perfect expectations!

I'm here today to help take the pressure off! This email is coming to you as a lifeline, if you will... an invitation to a healthy perspective shift today.

You aren't perfect.
Your kids aren't perfect.
So, why are you expecting your homeschool to be perfect?

Let me ask you this:

What feelings of inadequacy & frustration are you wrestling with today that simply boil down to an unrealistic expectation of perfection?

Let me offer you the cheat-code to overcoming that stifling pressure of perfection:

You have to make a distinction between EXCELLENCE and PERFECTION, then allow yourself lots of GRACE when you feel you fall short!

Excellence + Grace > Perfection

What's the secret sauce to distinguishing between the two?

Perfection demands. Excellence inspires.

Perfection requires you to measure up to an unattainable goal.
Excellence inspires you to be the best version of yourself you can be. You can apply this to every area of your life, including your parenting and your homeschool.

Imagine how much good it will do for your kids to see you model excellence and grace instead of striving for perfection! Your example will teach them how to give themselves grace when they need it, while still aiming for excellence in all they do.

(If you're interested in diving deeper into the concept of excellence, check out my YouTube video, The Biblical Standard for Excellence in Academics.)

You can take so much pressure off yourself by this simple perspective adjustment!

In fact, so much of homeschooling is about our mindset and confidence. If you're looking for more help with your mindset, as well as lots of ideas and practical strategies for how to homeschool, Homeschool Crash Course is for you!

When you're feeling overwhelmed, remember... You've got this!

Don't forget your WHY. Everything we're doing in this messy, beautiful journey called homeschooling is all for the same ultimate reason...

Because our kids deserve better,

Amy
