Christmas Eve Book Exchange

Start a New Tradition: Christmas Eve Book Exchange

December 21, 20241 min read

Do you want to sneak some meaningful learning into your holiday traditions? Consider trying a Christmas Eve book exchange! This activity encourages a love of reading and creates cherished memories.

How It Works:

  1. Pick out a book for each family member (new or secondhand).

  2. Wrap the books and place them under the tree.

  3. On Christmas Eve, exchange and unwrap the books.

  4. Spend the evening reading together, perhaps with hot cocoa and holiday cookies.

At our house, we take it a step further and create “Christmas Eve boxes” for each child. We’ve done it for so many years now that the kids know what to expect: some festive pajamas, a book of some kind, and some fun snacks! We adapt the book selections to each child’s interest and reading level. Sometimes, we do word search books or activity books for the kids who are still learning to appreciate sitting and reading.

If your kids are too wound up about Christmas to sit and read right then, maybe choose a fun holiday movie or some games, pop some popcorn, and just enjoy spending the evening together.

This cozy tradition is a great way to unwind before the big day and to instill a love of learning in your children!
