Should My Homeschool Look Like School?

Should My Homeschool Look Like School?

If you've ever wondered whether your homeschool should look like a traditional school, you’re not alone. Many parents wrestle with this question, and today, I want to give you a perspective shift that could bring you so much freedom in your homeschooling journey.

Should your homeschool look and function and feel like a school? Yes and no.

Let’s break it down:

  • Why your homeschool shouldn’t look like school: Traditional schools are designed for mass education. Your homeschool isn’t. You have the ability to tailor education to your child’s unique learning style. If recreating a classroom structure is leading to stress, frustration, or burnout, you have the freedom to shift your approach!

  • Why your homeschool might look like school (to some extent, anyway): If you grew up in a traditional school setting, that’s your most familiar framework. Starting with a structured curriculum and schedules can be a helpful launching point because that’s the way you knew how to learn, so that could be what is most comfortable for you. Over time, however, you’ll begin to give yourself permission to deviate from some of the forms and structures of traditional school and discover what works best for your family.

I’ve personally experienced this journey myself. When I started homeschooling, I tried to replicate a traditional school day—set schedules, quizzes, and even a strict plan for every subject. But as time went on, I realized that flexibility was one of the biggest benefits of homeschooling. I had the freedom to adjust based on my children’s learning styles. One of my kids thrived with video lessons, while another learned best sitting next to me on the couch, talking things through. That’s when it clicked: School isn’t the goal; education is.

At the end of the day, it’s less about the schedule structure and processes and more about outcomes. If your child learns best lying on the floor watching a video and doing her papers with the family dog snuggled up next to her, let her do it. If she focuses better by sitting at a desk in a quiet room, let her do that. You have the freedom to shape learning in a way that truly benefits your child. The key is confidence in your approach and a strategy that works.

That’s exactly why I created Homeschool Crash Course—a self-paced series of on-demand videos designed to help you build a strong foundation, sidestep common mistakes, and gain the strategies you need to homeschool successfully.
