What if Your Child Falls Behind—or Works Ahead?
One of the most freeing (and sometimes intimidating) parts of homeschooling is this:
📚 Your child doesn’t have to fit into a grade-level box.
But... What if they’re working ahead of their peers? Or struggling and seem to be behind?
We’ve been there—and I want to encourage you today with something I say in my course for parents:
“Respectfully, adopt the ‘Says who?’ mindset.”
Just because traditional schools set certain age-grade level parameters doesn’t mean those timelines are right for your child.
🎓 A Personal Example
When our daughter started flying through material at an early age, we began accelerating her. She started K5 at just 4 years old. Later, she even skipped a grade in upper elementary.
That decision raised a lot of questions from friends and family:
“What are you going to do when she graduates at 15?”
Our answer? “We don’t know yet—We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.”
At the time, she was 8. We didn’t need to know the endgame; we just needed to do what felt right for her then.
We’ve done the same with our sons, introducing them to gentle K4 material at age 3 for just an hour a day. They were eager, curious, and ready—and that made it a milestone, not a push.
Nonetheless, there have been years when we didn’t finish “on time.” We took much longer than a traditional school year to cover a grade level’s worth of material. You know what? We didn’t sweat it. We knew there was plenty of time to make up any ground lost, so we just kept our eyes focused and kept moving ahead.
See, homeschooling lets us personalize the pace—and that’s a gift. Sometimes that means moving ahead. Sometimes it means slowing down. The goal is learning, not meeting arbitrary deadlines.
💡 What This Means for You
You have permission to break free from comparison.
✔️ If your child masters a concept early, move on.
✔️ If they need more time, slow it down.
✔️ And if someone questions your pace and tells you you’re moving too fast or too slow, ask yourself: Says who?
