Is Your Child Struggling with Some Subjects? Here’s a Quick Tip to Help!

I hope you're feeling refreshed and ready for an exciting homeschooling journey this year.

If you've ever found yourself in a situation where your child is excelling in some subjects but struggling in others, you're not alone. In fact, it’s totally normal! One mom reached out to me, concerned because her child, who would normally be in second grade, was repeating first grade this year. While some subjects are a great fit, others are boring to her son because he already knows the material. I totally get that!

Here's the beauty of homeschooling: You don’t have to stick to a set grade level for every subject. That’s right — in homeschooling, your child can move at his own pace. So, if he’s thriving in math but needs extra help in reading, it’s perfectly fine to let him go at different speeds in different subjects. There’s no need to follow the rigid structure of traditional schools!

For example, my youngest right now is in 3rd grade, but he’s taking 4th grade Math. Why? He breezed through 3rd grade Math and was ready to keep moving (the kid does great at Math), so I ordered the next grade level’s book for him to start on while he finishes up 3rd grade in everything else.

I recommend checking out curriculum options that allow you to mix and match levels. For example, BJU Press lets you substitute up to two subjects per grade, so your child can be a grade ahead or below in some areas and still work at the rest of the grade level in other subjects. Imagine your first grader breezing through second-grade Math while taking a bit more time to master first-grade English!

The key here is flexibility and finding what works best for your child. Every learner is different, and you have the freedom to adjust, whether it’s moving up a grade for a subject they excel at or slowing down to reinforce areas where they need extra practice. Don’t stress about fitting into a prescribed schedule—Your child’s unique needs and progress are what matter most.
