Afraid of Failing Homeschooling?

Are You Afraid of Failing at Homeschooling? Let's Talk About It.

Are you afraid of failing your kid if you homeschool? I completely understand the fear you're feeling. The thought of failing, especially when it comes to your child's future, can be overwhelming. But what if I told you that this fear doesn’t have to stop you from moving forward?

Here’s the truth: It’s okay to have doubts. It’s okay to be unsure about whether homeschooling is right for your family. But what's important is to face that fear and move past it. The fear of failure often keeps us stuck, paralyzed by the unknown.

But here’s what you really need to ask yourself: What does failure look like to you? Would failure mean your child is struggling academically? Feeling socially disconnected? Or are you afraid you will make a mistake that will grossly affect their future? What is the worst-case scenario in your fears, and are you sure that sending your kids to traditional school is the foolproof way to avoid that scenario?

The point of those questions is to help you realize this: Fear doesn’t play fair. If you choose to place your child in school, you will be presented with a whole other set of fears. At some point, you have to cut fear off and not let it drive your decisions!

Let me share a bit about my own experience. When I first started homeschooling my kids, I wasn’t sure if it was going to work. I had my own fears—What if I couldn’t keep up with their needs? What if it didn’t work out? But after 12 years of homeschooling four kids, I've learned that the worst-case scenario in my mind isn’t what happened, and even when things did go awry, it wasn’t as catastrophic as I feared it would be. We recovered quickly and kept moving forward.

Fast forward 12 years from that moment when my husband and I decided to “give homeschooling a try for a year,” and my eldest just graduated with honors, she’s been accepted into three colleges so far (including a rather prestigious one), and my other three kids are thriving. The flexibility of homeschooling has allowed us to tailor the pace to each child’s strengths and needs, and it's been an incredibly rewarding journey.

The first year can be the hardest—there’s no doubt about it. But once you find your rhythm, it becomes so much easier. You’ll get to see your child excel in ways that might have been impossible in a traditional school setting.

I’m here to tell you: You can do this.
